It’s Paczki Day!

New Orleans has Mardi Gras, Rio has Carnival. But we all know that in Wisconsin – especially in Pulaski – today is Paczki Day! To celebrate we pulled out this great 2010 In Wisconsin report from WPT reporter Andy Soth that shares the sweet secret to why customers come all day long to Smurawa’s Country Bakery to get the traditional jam-filled pastry known as Paczki and pronounced “poonchkey” on this day before Lent.

Did you get a taste of these delicious iconic pastries today?

Rick Bayless Takes Us On Location in Mexico, And It’s Delicious

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 11.22.37 AM

It’s not unusual for Rick Bayless to be in Mexico recording a new season of Mexico: One Plate at a Time (full disclosure: to me, the best cooking show on television.) What is unusual – and really exciting for those of us who are stuck back here in the wind, snow and cold of Wisconsin – is that Chef Bayless is taking us all along on this production with daily behind the scenes video updates from each unique – and delicious – location he and his crew are visiting.

You can watch all of them, follow along with the adventure as it happens and share your comments directly with Bayless and his team on his Facebook page.

But, I also wanted to share a couple of my favorite video dispatches that have already arrived.  Continue reading Rick Bayless Takes Us On Location in Mexico, And It’s Delicious

WPT Here and Now: Gov. Scott Walker Interview

Screen Shot 2016-01-24 at 2.25.10 PMIn this new interview from Thursday afternoon, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker talks with Wisconsin Public Television’s Here and Now reporter Zac Schultz about what he learned during his run for president last year and dealing with his lowest approval numbers since he ended his campaign. Looking ahead, Walker said he would be crisscrossing the state, rather than crisscrossing the country, as he works to implement his legislative agenda in 2016.

Watch the full interview below and tune in to Here and Now 7:30 p.m. Fridays on Wisconsin Public Television or explore past reports and interviews online anytime.

Downton Abbey Cast Secret Revealed – They’re Really From Wisconsin

Backstage at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, three Downton Abbey cast members revealed a hilarious secret – they’re not British at all. They actually hail from Wisconsin. In the words of Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Allen Leech below, “Go Cheese!”

The bit was a follow up to another funny moment on the couch with Colbert when the three actors lived out a Downton Abbey scene in full American accents. As the title notes, it sounds utterly bizarre. You can find that video below, too.

Rest assured, the show’s final season which premieres Jan. 3 on WPT has plenty of twists and turns, but probably won’t find the Granthams visiting long-lost family in Green Bay. Although we wouldn’t complain if they did. Go cheese!

WPT Interviews: Christopher Kimball From America’s Test Kitchen

When America’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s Country host Christopher Kimball visited Madison recently, Wisconsin Public Television caught up with the celebrated chef and founder and editor of Cook’s Illustrated magazine to ask him about his go-to rules on kitchen gadgets, the small things every home cook should know to be successful, a few surprising hints that make life in the kitchen easier (spoiler alert: vodka makes great pie crusts!), his favorite cocktail, the cheese question he gets asked most and the secret to the perfect cheesecake.

We even surprised him a bit when he learned that an Old Fashioned made with brandy was the Wisconsin drink of choice. Just wait to see his reaction to that!

Back to the Future With Wisconsin Public Television

On this Back to the Future Day, everyone is talking about what didn’t come true by Oct. 21, 2015. We’re taking the opposite approach, looking back in time into the archives of Airwaves magazine to see what was airing on Wisconsin Public Television on Oct. 26, 1985 – the day Marty and Doc left Hill Valley for the future.

For the record, we turned to our trusty Sports Almanac to find out that the Wisconsin Football team lost the game against Illinois that closed out our broadcast day, 25-38.

And the Winner Is…

When we asked WPT’s Facebook fans to choose from five images to represent our state on the soon-to-be-redesigned PBS.org, we were overwhelmed by the response. All five photos proved popular, with folks weighing in on why they thought each were perfectly Wisconsin. But, the landslide favorite by far was this idyllic scene of a boat on a Wisconsin lake under a warm sun. Here’s just a few of the comments on the photo that garnered 430 “likes.”

This is peace on Earth. And this is Wisconsin. – Gwen

Tranquil and restful, like the best of outdoor Wisconsin. – Nanette

I love them all, but this one is amazing. – Kris

Thanks to everyone who helped us choose!
