WPT Education Helps Students Explore the Life of Joe Bee Xiong

A new student-focused resource created to expand the Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Eau Claire program explores the life of Joe Bee Xiong, the first Hmong American elected to public office in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) Education has just announced the release of a new Wisconsin Biographies story: Joe Bee Xiong: War to Peace. 

Created as an additional, student-focused chapter to the Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Eau Claire program, which premiered on WPT in the summer of 2018,  this new Wisconsin Biographies story explores the life of Joe Bee Xiong, the first Hmong American to be elected to public office in Wisconsin. Joe Bee Xiong: War to Peace is now available online at WPTeducation.org. WPT Education Brings Hmong History to Wisconsin Classrooms

The Wisconsin Hometown Stories project offers a fantastic opportunity for in-depth exploration of the local histories and stories that showcase communities around our state.

WPT Education works side-by-side with teachers in each community to build content and pathways connecting students with the history and stories around them.

Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Eau Claire will premiere later in 2018. As we began our research in that region, an educator survey revealed the need for more digital learning resources – especially biographies and materials that highlight the Hmong community.

Read on to see how WPT’s work in Eau Claire is resulting in new, community-specific digital learning resources – including the history and culture of Hmong residents.

Get Up and Go! With PBS Kids' Mr. Steve

The 2012 WPT Get Up and Go! Day is in the books after kids from all over Wisconsin danced, sang and played outside the WPT studios in Madison, at the L.E. Phillips Library in Eau Claire and at The Building for Kids Children’s Museum in Appleton.

The events might be over, but you and your kids can still bop along with the songs Mr. Steve performed!

In the playlist below, you will find all of the on-air segments from the morning event. There are lots of fun and interactive songs that inspire kids to Get Up and Go! and a bunch of great activity ideas from volleyball to yoga to exploring the outdoors. So, dig into the fun and let’s go!
