The Final Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

In the beginning, there were 12. Now, only Andrew, Candice and Jane remain. The Final marks the end of an era in more ways than one, as the iconic show announced that its format will change drastically next season.

But, for now, let’s bask in the glow – or the dough – of The Great British Baking Show we all know so well. The Final put the spotlight on the three remaining bakers, as Mel, Sue, Mary and yes, even Paul, stepped aside for a minute to let the bakers do their magic.

And unsurprisingly, our Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge bakers amazed us till the very end, tackling the most challenging of The Final challenges, and not backing away from incorporating hard-to-find local ingredients (we asked our bakers to do their best to incorporate three local ingredients in The Final).

We cannot say it enough: You are all incredible.

So, it’s that time again: Let’s recap the happenings in the tent and in our bakers’ kitchens. If you haven’t seen The Final yet, here’s your spoiler alert!

Pie Week Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

It’s the semi finals, and there’s plenty of drama and plenty of bakes. But only four bakers remain!

We broke from convention this time, transforming the week’s challenge from patisserie to pie.  Everyone loves pie — and we couldn’t bear the thought of going all summer without baking a whole bunch of pies. But don’t think we forgot about our beloved Great British Baking Show friends: We did incorporate some inspiration from this week’s episode since pie crust is a type of patisserie.

Let’s showcase the efforts of our local bakers and recap this week’s episode of The Great British Baking Show. If you haven’t seen this episode yet, here’s your spoiler warning!

Week 7 Dessert Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

And then there were six. Dessert week asked the remaining six bakers to craft a roulade (a.k.a. Swiss roll) fit for a whole family, a Marjolaine and 24 mini mousse cakes. The contestants were sidetracked by their swirls, mystified by the flourless Marjolaine, and slightly maddened by their mousse.

Our Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge bakers ran into similar problems as their Great British Baking Show counterparts. But they didn’t back away from the unfamiliar and even took things to the next level with some very Wisconsin twists — and incredibly punny dessert names. Cow-kies and Cream Roulade, anyone?

Here’s our recap of both the show and the submissions we received this week in The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge. Read to the bottom to find out who our local featured bakers are for Week 7!

WEEK 5 PASTRY RECAP: THE GREAT WISCONSIN BAKING CHALLENGE

We’re halfway through Season 4 of The Great British Baking Show … but at least we have our butter to console us. Lots and lots of butter.

The eight remaining contestants walked into The Tent ready to put their layering skills to the test with pastry week. The mood was upbeat, and many bakers were still hopeful that Star Baker was within grasp. But Mary and Paul had a few challenges up their sleeves …

Read on to see who our Week 5 featured bakers are in The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge, but first, let’s reflect on what we learned from the latest episode of The Great British Baking Show. Spoiler alert! Continue reading WEEK 5 PASTRY RECAP: THE GREAT WISCONSIN BAKING CHALLENGE

Week 3 Bread Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

Bread week: The most gluten-filled time of the year! On the “Bread” episode of The Great British Baking Show, contestants were asked to make three types of bread: Chocolate Bread, Dampfnudel and a Savory Plaited Centerpiece.

In the style of The Great British Baking Show, we asked our Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge bakers to join in on the fun as well by making one of the aforementioned breads. BUT, while our bakers only needed to choose one, they were also asked to add a Wisconsin twist to their creations.

Before we unveil our six Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge featured bakers for Week 3, let us quickly recap the latest episode of The Great British Baking Show and see how the contestants fared. If you haven’t watched it yet, this warning is for you: Spoiler alert! Continue reading Week 3 Bread Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

Week 2 Cookies Recap: The Great Wisconsin Baking Challenge

In the second week of Season 4 of The Great British Baking Show, the 11 remaining contestants tackled three very challenging biscuit recipes: Iced Biscuits, Viennese Whirls and a 3-D Gingerbread Story.

Here in Wisconsin, hearing the word “biscuit” reminds us of chicken, glazed ham, gravy and doggie treats. So, we’re calling this week’s challenge what it really is: Cookies.

We put our local bakers to the test, asking them not only to follow suit and select one of these cookie varieties to tackle, but to add a Wisconsin twist to their creations. We know that you’ll be impressed!

Before we unveil our six new featured bakers for Week 2 below, let us quickly recap the latest episode. If you haven’t watched it yet, this warning is for you: Spoiler alert!
